It should come as no surprise that Thomas Rhett enjoys the music of an artist like Bruno Mars. After all, Rhett's current single, 'Make Me Wanna,' is pretty funky in its own right.

"I'm obsessed with Bruno Mars' records," Rhett tells Rolling Stone Country. "I'd give my right leg to be able to sing like that dude."

In fact, prior to the 2014 American Country Countdown Awards, Rhett told his Twitter followers that he would record a cover of Mars' 2013 smash 'When I Was Your Man' if 3,000 people re-tweeted his tweet. They more than complied, and Rhett has now released his own version of the tune -- and an accompanying video.

"We kept the video really simple," Rhett says. "I wanted everyone to see that all we did was go in there, grab a mic, play the piano and sing the whole thing down. It's a live take with a live vocal.

"The whole thing wasn't nearly as funny as I thought it would be. It was serious," he adds. "The moment [band member] Josh [Reedy] started playing and I started singing, I felt it. That song gave me chills the first time I heard it, and it still does."

The video also includes footage of Rhett with his wife Lauren.

"In the context of the song, it doesn't make sense that she's in there," Rhett says, "but any time with my wife is great."

Rhett says that he and Reedy rehearsed the song while on the road, and it took a bit of work to get everything just right.

"After soundcheck, I'd sit there with Josh, and we'd play it over and over ... We'd work on the phrasing, the breathing, the notes, the key," Rhett explains. "I think we had to lower it, like, five keys before I could sing the song, because Bruno sings so high."

The singer-songwriter is now out on tour with Florida Georgia Line, and he's been including a different Mars song in his setlist. Watch him perform 'Uptown Funk' here.
