The HawtThorns, ‘Broken Wings’ [Exclusive Premiere]
Los Angeles-based Americana duo the HawtThorns are premiering their new song "Broken Wings" exclusively for readers of The Boot. Press play below to listen.
"Broken Wings" laments the end of a relationship -- but only sort of. As it turns out, this wasn't an equal or truthful partnership: "You had them all believing I was the one to blame / But now the makeup's off and the curtain's down / And we're standing eye to eye ..." the HawtThorns sing. "You clipped my broken wings to keep me on the ground."
“Most of us have had an alliance of some kind that has fallen apart. Sometimes hindsight is 20/20, and you wake up to the realization that the person in your life you trusted was paying lip service to love and honesty," the duo explains of the song. "It is a powerful moment when you can identify it and figure out how to move forward."
Comprised of husband-and-wife duo KP and Johnny Hawthorn, the HawtThorns bring a truly diverse slate of musical experiences to the table. Prior to forming the HawtThorns, KP was a solo singer-songwriter who formed the group Calico with Jaime Wyatt and Manda Mosher in 2012. The trio split up after two records, right about the time that KP met Johnny, a writer, guitarist and producer who spent time on the road with alt-rock bands including Everclear and Toad the Wet Sprocket before launching his own solo career.
The HawtThorns will showcase their West Coast-influenced Americana sound on Morning Sun, their debut album, on which "Broken Wings" appears. The record is set for release on Aug. 9 via 40 Below Records and is available for pre-order now.
