Watch the Belles Go Acoustic for ‘The Leavin” [Exclusive Premiere]
The Belles are a rising mother-daughter country duo with a familial harmony fans need to hear. The duo is premiering an acoustic performance of their song "The Leavin'" exclusively with The Boot; press play above to watch.
Comprised of mother Jaymie Jones and daughter Kelli Jones, the Belles are accompanied by Kevin Sullivan for this performance of "The Leavin'." He adds light guitar as the Kelli takes lead vocals and Jaymie dots the performance with harmonies.
"Of all the pain I've ever felt / All the cards I thought were dealt uneven / Left me bleeding," the Belles sing. "All is fair in life and love / Someone stays and someone does the leavin' / Oh, the leavin'."
"The Leavin'" is one of four songs on the Belles' self-titled EP, released in March. The Omaha, Neb.-bred duo's debut project, it was produced by Mickey Jack Cones. The Belles EP is available via iTunes and Spotify.
Before performing with her daughter, Jaymie Jones was part of the '90s femme-pop quartet Mulberry Lane with the Rizzuto sisters. The group earned a Top 10 adult contemporary hit with their 1999 single "Harmless." The genesis for the Belles came, however, when Kelli Jones would sing harmony for her mother when she performed solo.
Being a mother-daughter duo, it's easy to compare the Belles to the Judds, but the latter mother-daughter duo truly did influence the former, even in non-musical ways. Jaymie Jones' first concert was a Statler Brothers show that the Judds opened; after the concert, she recalls, she told her mother she wanted to learn to play the guitar. Then, in 2011, Wynonna and Naomi Judd's stage manager, Albert West, saw Jaymie and Kelli Jones perform together and suggested they create a duo with Kelli singing lead.
“I like to think of myself as the setting and [Kelli] as the diamond,” Jaymie Jones says. “I’m not trying to be the center of attention at all. I feel like she’s the center, I am just there to support her.”
