Randy Travis Issues Statement Clarifying Heart Surgery Reports

A representative for Randy Travis has issued a statement to update his condition. Contrary to previous reports, the country superstar has not undergone heart surgery.

Travis, 54, has been in the hospital since Sunday (July 7). He is being treated for viral cardiomyopathy, an infection of the heart muscles that can lead to permanent damage and even heart failure. His sister-in-law said Tuesday (July 9) that he had undergone heart surgery, but the singer's publicist says that's incorrect.

According to the rep, "Travis was admitted into a Texas hospital on Sunday and underwent placement of an IMPELLA peripheral left ventricular assist device for stabilization prior to transferring hospitals."

The singer remains in critical condition.
