It's a bit ironic that Natalie Maines' first solo single has the same title as a Dixie Chicks song, especially since the feisty singer is quite vocal about her divorce from country music. But the brand-new "Without You" is a song that surely Chicks fans will enjoy, despite its departure from Natalie's country roots. The mom of two puts a lot of heart into the song, originally written and performed by Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder. (Listen to "Without You" below.)

"Without You" is the first single released from Natalie's upcoming album, Mother, which hits stores May 7. Produced by Ben Harper, the 10-track disc's title track is a cover of a song from Pink Floyd's The Wall. Mother also features a tune written by fellow Chicks, Martie Maguire and Emily Robison. Still, Natalie insists the project is all rock 'n roll. "I wanted this music to be very different from the Dixie Chicks," she tells Billboard. "Lots of albums by lead singers might just as well have been made by the band, but I think this is very different from anything the Chicks could make. That separation and distinction was important."
