Severe Weather Forces Cancellation of the Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile’s Mountain Jam 2016 Performances
The Avett Brothers and Brandi Carlile were among the artists forced to cancel their sets at Mountain Jam 2016 on Sunday (June 5) due to a major storm in the area.
Hunter Mountain was plagued by downpours beginning in the early morning hours of Sunday. The rain continued on and off throughout early afternoon sets from, among others, the Ballroom Thieves. Blues rockers the London Souls were the last act to play before Mountain Jam's organizers made the decision to cancel the remainder of the event because of an impending thunderstorm.
"We are devastated to make this decision, but the safety of our fans, artists and crew always comes first," a statement on the Mountain Jam website reads. "We need to evacuate the festival grounds immediately. We strongly advise you to leave the venue. If you choose to stay, please take shelter ... Festival staff and police will inform you when it is safe to remove your tents / belongings from the mountain."
Festivalgoers with Sunday-only and multi-day tickets will receive a partial refund, with the refund method to be determined, according to the festival's statement on the cancellation.
"Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available, and thank you so much for your loyalty and patience," Mountain Jam's statement concludes. "We hope to see you back in 2017 for a great show."
Storms in the New York State area also wreaked havoc on Day 3 of Governors Ball. Organizers of that festival canceled the entire day's events to keep fans and artists safe.
Although Jammers did not get to see the Avetts or Carlile, throughout the four-day Mountain Jam, they were treated to shows from Jason Isbell, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats and more.
