Miranda Lambert Sends ‘Only Prettier’ Message to Mean Girls
Miranda Lambert says her new single, 'Only Prettier,' which is steadily climbing the charts, was penned as a direct message to a specific group of people from her past.
"Natalie Hemby and I wrote this song together, and she had this verse," Miranda recalls (quote via CMIL). "She said, 'I have this idea I want to play for you. 'I've been saved by the grace of southern charm. I got a mouth like a sailor and you're more like a Hallmark card.' And right there she had me. Just the fact that she had the guts to say what we all wanted to say to those mean skinny girls in high school."
Miranda is proud of her curves, and hopes to inspire other girls to embrace their looks as well. "I'm OK with the way I look," she insists. "And thank God I didn't get in the modeling industry so I can actually eat food, which makes me happy. But I have a lot of girls who come up to me all the time and say, 'We're so glad you're just normal, you're normal sized and you're not emaciated.' I'm proud to stand for that."
The singer hopes the song becomes a mantra for girls of all ages."'Only Prettier' to me is an anthem. It's my own anthem," she says. "And I want girls to have their fists in the air, singing 'Only Prettier' with me."
To accompany the song -- and perhaps take home another CMT Award for Female Video of the Year -- Miranda shot a memorable 1950's-inspired clip with the help of good friends Kellie Pickler, Laura Bell Bundy and Lady Antebellum's Hilary Scott.
