As family and friends continue to mourn the death of Mindy McCready, two of the men in her past are speaking out about the tragic end to the country star's life.

"I'm saddened to hear of her passing, but I'm not surprised," her former fiancé, actor Dean Cain, tells People magazine.

The "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman" star was engaged to the songstress in 1997, long before her publicized troubles surfaced. Still, he says even back then, she was on a fast downward spiral.

"I can't paint too pretty a picture," he reveals. "She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren't allowed to be good."

Cain says he ultimately had to leave his own home and stay in a hotel because of McCready's erratic behavior. "She was never abusive or addictive with me, but red flags were everywhere," he explains. "I saw all the bad signs and told her to get out ... Everything she did was a manipulation of sorts. She would just get combative."

Still, the actor, who says McCready was "poisonous," is concerned for the well-being of her two sons, 6-year-old Zander and 10-month-old Zayne. "My first thought was of the poor kids. To think about the legacy those boys have been left, it's just tragic. All her troubles were self-inflicted. She had everything. She was a tremendous talent but everything about it was a waste."

Also commenting on McCready's suicide is Roger Clemens, the professional baseball player who is rumored to have had a 10-year affair with McCready that began when she was only 15 years old. Still, while expressing sympathy, Clemens alludes that he was nothing more than a casual acquaintance to the late singer.

"Yes, that is sad news," says the famed pitcher (quote via Billboard magazine). "I had heard over time that she was trying to get peace and direction in her life ... The few times that I had met her and her manager/agent, they were extremely nice."

McCready's sons are still in foster care in Arkansas. A custody hearing will be held on April 5 to determine if the boys should live with their grandmother and step-grandfather in Florida. McCready's ex-boyfriend, Billy McKnight, is fighting for custody of Zander, who is his biological child.

Preliminary autopsy results determined McCready died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Funeral services are still pending.
