Luke Combs Says Success Hasn’t Changed How His Family Treats Him
Much has changed onstage for Luke Combs since the days of playing free shows to empty bars. However, the country star says that the breakout success of his debut studio album, This One's for You, has only changed his visits home to see family in one major way.
"They don't get to see me as much, and I wish they did," Combs told The Boot and other media outlets at a recent press conference.
Other than scheduling logistics, the country singer says that his trips home to North Carolina haven't changed a bit. "It's no different than when I went home five or six years ago," he explains. "I went and visited my grandma, and most of my whole mom's side of my family, who I grew up around, still live in Charlotte.
"So I went over to my grandmother's, and she still watches her soap opera every day at noon. Like, I came in and she was like, 'Well, what do you want for dinner? Do you want Chinese food or burgers?' It was the same as when I was living there playing open mic nights," Combs adds. "They treat me no differently."
Combs goes on to say that when he's home, he enjoys the normalcy of being just another member of the family, and tries to take a break from talking about his life in Nashville.
"It's really nice to go there and just feel like one of the cousins at the Thanksgiving dinner," he admits. "I try not to talk about music. If it comes up, it's fine, but most of the time, we just hang out and around the new little cousins and stuff. It's fun to go home."
Combs already has a busy 2019 ahead of him, too: Twenty-three of his 28 scheduled Beer Never Broke My Heart Tour stops have already sold out. The trek is scheduled to begin at the end of January, with Lanco and Jameson Rodgers opening.
