Levi Riggs, ‘Can’t Cool Me Off’ [Exclusive Premiere]
Country singer Levi Riggs has a new single coming Friday (Aug. 9), but our readers are getting an advance listen. Press play below to hear "Can't Cool Me Off," premiering exclusively with The Boot.
An acoustic guitar riff leads "Can't Cool Me Off," a profession of love to a woman who's simply too hot to handle. "Give me some sunscreen, 'cause baby, I'm burning / Got me singin' whoa-oh-oh / Give me that love thing that only you bring / Got me singin' whoa-oh-oh / Can't cool me off," Riggs sings in the chorus.
Riggs and his friend Ali Pierre co-wrote "Can't Cool Me Off" during a trip to Denver, Colo. The idea came to him while he was outside on a hot summer day, "so Ali and I used it to put a fun spin on a summer love song."
"It's a blend of club dance beat with country instrumentation," Riggs adds. "Fans love to dance to it at my live shows because it has a great beat, and it's fun for them to sing along to!"
An Indiana native who also lived in Minnesota and Texas as a child, Riggs learned to read music by following along with his grandma in church. His first concert was a Shenandoah show, but his own first time onstage was a fifth grade talent contest: He learned John Michael Montgomery's "Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)" to accompany a group of girls who wanted to line-dance.
"Dad said, ‘You’ve gotta ham it up, take this up into the stands’ -- so I did. I found a blue-eyed, blonde-haired teacher and sang to her," Riggs recalls of the moment. "It stole the show."
These days -- after playing sports and acting in musicals in high school, and singing with the Purdue Varsity Glee Club and working on his own music in college -- Riggs is working with producers and songwriters in Music City. In 2018, he was a finalist in the NashNext competition.
"I’ve worked hard to get to this point, no doubt," Riggs reflects. "In the end, if I’m releasing and performing music that truly resonates for listeners, I’m doing my job. There’s nothing more rewarding than that.”
