Lee Ann Womack is using her celebrity status to help women and girls more than 8,000 miles away. The superstar is the new spokesperson for Join My Village, a social change initiative started by iVillage. The campaign raises money and awareness for economic and educational opportunities for women and girls in Malawi.

"As a mother of two girls, I see the opportunities that education has created for my daughters' future," Lee Ann states on the website. "I believe that every girl in the world has unlimited potential and by supporting Join My Village, I know we can provide girls with opportunities to learn, achieve and improve their future."

The campaign that Lee Ann is partnering with is a joint effort between General Mills, Merck and the humanitarian organization, CARE. Together, they will donate money every time someone visits joinmyvillage.com, and 'unlocks dollars' by spending time on the site learning more about the plight of females in Malawi. General Mills and Merck have also pledged to match individuals' donations up to $900,000.

Lee Ann's role in the fundraising efforts include appearing in a public service announcement, attending various social events to promote the cause and trying to motivate 100,000 of her fans to join the initiative during the upcoming 2011 leg of the Reba McEntire and George Strait co-headlined tour.

Lee Ann will also participate in a Twitterview Wednesday, March 9, where fans can ask questions about her role in Join My Village, as well the women and children of Malawi. Follow Lee Ann Womack on Twitter at @LAWSOCIALCLUB.

In addition to her efforts with Join My Village, Lee Ann is also working on another studio album when she's not hitting the stage as the opening act for Reba and King George. See her concert schedule here.
