Justin Moore Drawn to Irony, Melody of ‘You Look Like I Need a Drink’
There was something unexpected that drew Justin Moore to his newest single, "You Look Like I Need a Drink." Written by Rodney Clawson, Matt Dragsteam and Natalie Hemby, the song's title had the country artist thinking one thing, then threw him for a loop when he actually heard the track.
"I saw the title of the song and thought, ‘Oh my gosh, what in the world is this going to be?’ And then I heard it, and it was something completely different from what I was thinking," Moore recalls to The Boot. "I loved the irony in it, and I thought the songwriters did a great job on it. Plus, melodically, I thought it had a great feel and great rhythm and just was fun. It’s been a little while since we’ve put an uptempo, fun song out."
With lines like "You look like I need a drink right now / You look like you’re gonna try to let me down nice and easy / I think I know why you won’t sit down / You’re just dancing around what you came here to do but you’re scared to / And all I can think, the way you’re looking at me / You look like I need a drink," Moore's newest single gives fans a glimpse into what Moore says will be a new chapter in his music career.
"The song, to me, had a pretty good combination of what we’ve done in the past, but also a little glimpse of what we’re going to do in the future, musically," he explains. "We did some different things in the studio, technically, and we thought this would be the perfect way [to introduce that]. We didn’t want to freak out the fans and give them something completely different than what we’ve done in the past."
Fortunately for Moore, "You Look Like I Need a Drink," which is all about heartache and letting go, is a song that no longer resonates in the singer's personal life.
"My wife and I have been together 13, 14, 15 years, and we’ve been married for eight or nine years, so hopefully I’m out of the woods as far as being dumped. That's at least the goal," he says with a laugh. "I’ve never been dumped, but I’m sure that the way I would have coped would have been to grab a drink."
Moore's new album will be released later this year. "You Look Like I Need a Drink" is now available for download on iTunes.
