Rockabye Baby Turns Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’ Into a Lullaby [Exclusive Premiere]
Parents, rejoice: Hip lullaby producers Rockabye Baby have put together an album's worth of lullaby versions of Johnny Cash songs, and The Boot is premiering the kid-friendly version of the iconic "Ring of Fire." Readers can press play below to listen.
Known for its lullaby takes on grown-up artists ranging from the Smiths and the Beatles to Bruno Mars and Justin Timberlake, Rockabye Baby have turned "Ring of Fire" into something that sounds a little bit like Jimmy Fallon's "classroom instruments" performances, during which the late-night host and guest artists perform hit songs with recorders, triangles and other children's instruments. This take on the Cash classic is largely driven by a xylophone, which plays the melody originally performed by mariachi horns. Even adults will likely feel a little more relaxed and calm thanks to the laid-back version of "Ring of Fire."
"In my book, Johnny Cash was the original OG. He was the Man in Black, an authentically cool and iconic musician with an unparalleled career, and a true bada-- who advocated for society’s underdogs. He not only walked the line, but he crossed the lines between multiple musical genres like no one else," says Lisa Roth, the CMH Label Group creative director who worked on the project. "He embraced country, rockabilly, rock, folk, gospel and more, and in that weary baritone, he sang about everything from death and redemption to love and heartbreak. We couldn’t be more excited to produce lullaby versions of Johnny Cash. It’s long overdue."
On Rockabye Baby: Lullaby Renditions of Johnny Cash, "Ring of Fire" is joined by other Cash classics, including "Folsom Prison Blues," "I Walk the Line" and "Sunday Morning Coming Down." The subject matter of these tunes might be a little "adult," but fortunately, the Rockabye Baby versions are totally instrumental.
Rockabye Baby: Lullaby Renditions of Johnny Cash is being released to commemorate what would have been Cash's 85th birthday. It's due out on Feb. 23.
