Jimmy Wayne Caught With His Pants Down
Jimmy Wayne, who is flying high with his No. 1 single 'Do You Believe Me Now,' had a little trouble flying the friendly skies last week. Wayne was at the airport in Oakland, Calif., when a misunderstanding at security resulted with him handcuffed in his underwear.
Wayne, who admits he was tired and groggy, entered the metal detector wearing shorts, a T-shirt and a sweatshirt. "I kept trying to get through and it would go off," he tells PEOPLE magazine, explaining that he then removed his sweatshirt and a necklace, but kept setting off the detector. "Finally the TSA officer said something to the effect of, 'Remove your shorts,' and I thought to myself, 'Now that sounds a little weird, but I guess it's OK -- I mean they show guys in boxers in the Sunday paper ads, right?' I guess maybe between not having enough sleep and not understanding him ... I don't know. I did it!"
Wayne removed his shorts, put them on the conveyor belt and returned to walk through the X-ray machine wearing only his boxer shorts and a T-shirt, much to the chagrin of the security officer. "He flipped!" Wayne says. "I ran back to the belt -- I thought I could grab my shorts real fast -- but the belt sucked the shorts up in the X-ray into the other side. So now I'm stuck in my boxers and everyone's staring."
The TSA officer quickly called for reinforcement. Wayne was cuffed by two "Oakland Raiders-sized police officers" and was questioned for almost a half hour, all while handcuffed in his boxers ... and while several other travelers snapped pictures with their cell phone cameras. Keeping his sense of humor, Wayne quipped, "At least my hair was fixed!"
The TSA has since issued a statement, recognizing that Wayne simply misunderstood the security officer's instructions. Thankful that he doesn't face any criminal charges, the singer offers two valuable pieces of advice: "Don't mess with Oakland," he jokes, "and watch out where you take your clothes off!"
