Review: Halfway to Hazard Bring the Rock to Country Jam Colorado
Halfway to Hazard returned to Country Jam 2016 in Grand Junction, Colo., on Thursday (June 16), for their first performance at the festival in eight years. Happy to be back in Colorado to celebrate the festival's 25th anniversary, the band performed an hour-long guitar-driven set on the main stage with the picturesque Rocky Mountains in the distance.
The duo's high energy set included fan favorites "Country 'Til the Day We Die" and "Countrified," previous singles "Daisy" and "Heaven on Down the Highway," as well as new songs off their forthcoming album.
Throughout each song, bandmates Chad Warrix and David Tolliver switched who sang lead, but it was when they sang together that left the greatest mark with their spot-on harmonies. Songs like the soaring power ballad "Gettin' Lucky" impressed both vocally and musically, while last single — the standout "Heaven on Down the Highway" — featured Tolliver's sultry baritone and had the crowd screaming along.
"I'm really happy Lee Brice is here. Tyler Farr ... ehhh," Tolliver joked to the audience, explaining that his friend Farr's cheeks get too rosy.
All joking aside, the band confessed their love for Colorado before playing the song that got them their record deal and tour with Tim McGraw, the poignant "Daisy."
"It feels good to still be making music and writing songs," Warrix added. "Thanks for supporting music and us."
Later, Halfway to Hazard debuted what they said might be their new single, "Meet Me in Vegas." A song that had the duo singing of meeting a lover in Vegas to get married, the catchy chorus and guitar interludes had the audience captivated.
"Meet me in Vegas. Take the red eye. Meet me in Vegas, baby. I'll make you my bride," they duo sang on the chorus.
The remainder of their set included minute-long electric guitar jams and the heavy rocker "My Baby's Guns N' Roses," which Tolliver wrote with Brantley Gilbert and appeared on Gilbert's 2014 release Just as I Am.
Country Jam runs through Sunday (June 19) in Grand Junction, Colo.
