Sister Sadie are a powerful quintet of some of the finest women in bluegrass music, and they're nominated for Best Bluegrass Album at Sunday's (Feb. 10) 2019 Grammy Awards, with their record Sister Sadie II. The group was elated all around upon receiving the news of their nomination back in December, and shared their excitement with each other.

"It was morning time, and, again, I had a cup of coffee and took my first sip and got a little text. The coffee … I had to repaint my walls. So I was very excited," Sister Sadie's Tina Adair told The Boot on the red carpet at the Nashville Grammy Awards nominee party in January. "[I'm] so excited, ‘cause it is what you dream of. Growing up in rural areas like we all did, we dreamt of it, watching it on TV. But to be here and to be part of it ... Being nominated is a win to me and all of us."

Adair's bandmate Dale Ann Bradley shared a similar sentiment: "I thought, ‘If I turn my phone over and if I have a lot of texts, we made it, and if I didn’t … you know,'" Bradley recalls. "There was only one text, and it was from [bandmate] Gena [Britt], but I got my vision open enough, and I looked at it and it said, ‘We made it! We made it!’ So then I started crying, and I think we cried all day long. It’s just really overwhelming."

Adds Deanie Richardson with a laugh, "For a few days after, we would call each other and say, ‘We’re still nominated.'"

Sister Sadie came together in the first place thanks to one of Nashville's oldest, tried-and-true venues: the Station Inn. While the city has built up around it, the music room, located in the Gulch, has been in the same spot for decades, and has hosted a legion of talented artists. Adair and the others all played there individually quite regularly, until one fateful night.

"I’m from [Nashville]. So I grew up at the Station Inn, going there when I was 12 years old. My name’s on the wall on there ... It’s been a hallowed place for me," Adair reflects. "Then we decided we were gonna put a configuration together. We’ve all worked together on and off through our careers. We put it together for a one-nighter at the Station Inn, thought it would be fun ...

"We went and did it. It went over great. We had a blast," she continues. "Then we started getting calls for more shows, so we were, like, ‘Oh, we have to do a couple of more.’ And now we’re at the Grammys."

As they say, the rest is history.

The 2019 Grammy Awards will take place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Feb. 10. The televised ceremony will begin at 8PM ET on CBS; the pre-telecast Premiere Ceremony will be available to stream online earlier in the evening.
