A New Dixie Chicks Album Is Coming … ‘Someday’
Around this time last year, Natalie Maines dropped some not-so-subtle hints on Instagram that she and fellow Dixie Chicks members Emily Strayer and Martie Maguire had spent some time in the studio. Fans who have kept following her on social media have seen behind the scenes of more studio time, photo shoots and more -- but still, there's been no word on when this new album will appear.
A quick video posted to Instagram over the weekend, however, shares more than visual cues: The trio took turns saying, "Dixie Chicks. Album. Coming ..." before a surprise appearance by producer and musician Jack Antonoff, who deadpanned, "Someday" -- the best blasé statement related to country music since the defeatist "yee-haw" from Alan Jackson's "She's Got the Rhythm (and I Got the Blues)."
In seconds, the Dixie Chicks and Antonoff establish that a follow-up to 2006's multi-Grammy Awards winner Taking the Long Way is in the works, even if there's no set timetable for its completion. Hey, we can keep hoping for that Dixie Chicks / Taylor Swift collaboration in the meantime, right?
Beyond its sociopolitical ramifications within the country music world, a new Dixie Chicks album would be well-timed. Brooks & Dunn, Reba McEntire, George Strait, Trisha Yearwood and others have tapped into nostalgic demands and classic country appeal on their commercial returns to form, and the Dixie Chicks could easily do the same while introducing a new wave of fans to blood harmonies and string band instrumentation.
