Dan + Shay: The ‘Timing Felt Right’ for 2019 Tour With Buddies Florida Georgia Line
Dan + Shay and Florida Georgia Line may have different musical styles, but that doesn't mean they're not mutual fans and good friends. In fact, Dan Smyers and Shay Mooney say the two duos are so close that the decision to team up for FGL's 2019 Can't Say I Ain't Country Tour was made over a simple text message.
"[Tyler Hubbard and Brian Kelley] hit us up before business had even happened. It was like, they texted us, like, 'Yo, we should go on the road together,' and we were like, 'Absolutely. Let's do it,'" Smyers recalls, adding that the team-up was an obvious choice because the two acts get along so well.
"We're friends with the guys, and our wives are friends with their wives. It's like one big family out there. It felt right," Smyers continues. "The timing felt right for us to go out on the road together."
Florida Georgia Line broke through into the mainstream slightly before Dan + Shay did, and they've been serving as an inspiration to the latter duo ever since. "We're huge fans of FGL," Smyers admits.
"I remember when we moved to Nashville, those guys were just getting started. They had put out "Cruise," and they had "Round Here" and "Get Your Shine On,"" he adds. "That whole first record was so inspiring to us. Those guys were pushing the envelope, and they exploded in a big way, and they're still killing it. They've always found ways to reinvent themselves, to keep evolving."
The Can't Say I Ain't Country Tour officially kicked off in early June. Morgan Wallen will join Dan + Shay as opening support throughout the summer, while select shows will feature Hardy and Canaan Smith, too.
