Crystal Gayle's musical portfolio includes a plethora of No. 1 country hits and two platinum- and four gold-certified records, so it's safe to say that she knows good music when she hears it. In a video interview, the singer, who is also the sister of Loretta Lynn, explains what she believes makes a song timeless.

Throughout the years, plenty people have asked Gayle what type of music she plays -- especially since one of her biggest hits, "Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue," was a huge success on both the country and pop charts.

"I would always say, 'It's good music,'" Gayle says. "I never really tried to put it into a category. I think music is timeless. Music is from the heart and soul."

As the first female artist in country music history to reach platinum sales status, with 1977's We Must Believe in Magic, many of Gayle's songs could be considered "timeless" country music tunes -- songs that transcend trends and fads to be just as important years after they were recorded as they were when they were first released.

"Timeless songs are very well-written songs, and Nashville is full of great songwriters," Gayle explains. "I think today, people tend to do a lot of their own writing, but there's so many wonderful songs out there that they're not listening to that could be their timeless song."

Born in Paintsville, Ky., Gayle was the last out of eight children in her family and was used to music being the backdrop of her life.

"... Everybody would play and sing and carry on," she recalls. "... Music was just so much of my life."

Lynn helped Gayle get her foot in the door in country music -- and Gayle hasn't looked back since. She's currently working on a new CD full of classic country songs and says that she's having "so much fun" with the process.

Gayle is among the artists included on Country Music of Your Life, a 10-CD, 150-song set featuring country hits from the 1950s through the '70s. Featured among the many tracks are Charlie Rich's "Behind Closed Doors," Charley Pride's "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'," Glen Campbell's "By the Time I Get to Phoenix," "Islands in the Stream" from Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton, Tanya Tucker's "Delta Dawn" and many more. The set also includes two bonus CDs featuring country hits by Eddy Arnold, Johnny Cash, Lefty Frizzell and more, as well as a full-color booklet packed with photos and stories about the artists and their music.

"I love the songs on Country Music of Your Life, and I'll never get tired of listening to them," Gayle remarks. "These classics sound every bit as wonderful today as when they were climbing the charts."
