Chris Stapleton Shares ‘Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning’ [LISTEN]
As anticipation for his sophomore album, From A Room, Volume 1, builds, Chris Stapleton is releasing some of its tracks ahead of the record's May 5 release date. Above, readers can press play to hear the singer-songwriter's version of "Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning."
The only non-Stapleton-penned song on From A Room: Volume 1, “Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning” was written by Gary P. Nunn and Donna Sioux Farar and originally made popular by Willie Nelson: Nelson released the song in 1982 as the third single from his Always on My Mind album, and it hit No. 2 on Billboard‘s country charts.
"Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning" finds Stapleton listing off all of the bad-luck things that happened to him in the morning -- an overdue bill in the mail, an alarm clock set to the wrong time, spilled coffee, etc. -- "but the last thing I needed / The first thing this morning / Was to have you walk out on me." His wife Morgane adds light harmonies throughout the slow, sparse song.
"So excuse me for lookin' / Like my world just ended / And excuse me for lookin' / Like I just lost my best friend," Stapleton sings in the tune's chorus. "And excuse me for livin' / And being forgiving / So just go on if you want to be free ..."
"Last Thing I Needed, First Thing This Morning" is the second track on From A Room, Volume 1. The record's Volume 2 is due out later in 2017; Stapleton and his band recorded the project at RCA Studio A with producer Dave Cobb.
