It's been one of the biggest songs of her career, but Carrie Underwood admits she almost passed on her multi-platinum-selling tune, 'Before He Cheats,' out of fear of fan backlash!

"I remember at that time -- because that was right after '[American] Idol' -- we [were] on the road, and then I get this song," she recalls to CMT. "I [thought], 'People are going to hate me for singing this song.' They're gonna be like, 'Oh my gosh, we can't listen to her album. She's bad, and I can't let my children listen to this.' Finally I was just like, 'You know what? I like this song. I would turn this song up on the radio, so I'm just gonna go for it.'"

Wise decision for the Oklahoma native. 'Before He Cheats' soared to the top of the country charts and became her first Top 10 pop hit as well. It also won the songbird a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance in 2007.

Carrie got a chance to share the stage with a rock icon recently, when she performed with Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler for a special CMT Crossroads episode that was taped as part of the Super Bowl festivities -- and earned glowing remarks from the rocker in the process.

"You really go for the heart and the jugular of true emotions which is real," he praised. "It's real."

The former 'Idol' champ is getting ready to release a new set of tunes on May 1, which she reveals will have even more songs that might be surprising to her fans. "There are a few darker songs on this album," Carrie hints. "I have always been a fan of songs that have attitude, but the ones I'm talking about have a darker storyline. It seemed to be what the album wanted, so I decided to roll with it."

The singer-songwriter will have a chance to show off her vocal chops, as well as perhaps add to her Grammy collection, when she heads to the Grammy Awards this Sunday (February 12). In addition to sharing the stage with Tony Bennett for a special duet, Carrie is also nominated for Best Country Solo Performance for her self-penned hit, 'Mama's Song.'

The 54th Annual Grammy Awards will air live from Los Angeles' Staples Center, Feb. 12 at 8:00 PM ET on CBS.
