Musicians across the genre spectrum gathered to honor singer-songwriter Chris Cornell on Wednesday evening (Jan. 16) with a five-hour, all-star tribute concert in Los Angeles that included 42 separate performances and a wide variety of surprise guests. Called I am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell, the evening's event featured contributions from country stars, including Brandi Carlile, who joined members of rock group Audioslave onstage for a rendition of their song "Like a Stone."

Readers can press play above to watch Carlile's performance with Audioslave, one of Cornell's former bands. For the final performance of the evening, Carlile returned to the stage to join another of Cornell's musical projects, Soundgarden, and Peter Frampton for "Black Hole Sun." Cornell wrote and originally performed the song as Soundgarden's frontman in 1994, and it went on to become one of the group's most important hits.

During Wednesday night's Cornell tribute concert, which took place at the Forum, Carlile also performed the Temple of the Dog song "Hunger Strike" with the band, of which Cornell was a member, Chris Stapleton and Brendan O'Brien; press play above to watch. The event, organized by Cornell's wife Vicky, was to benefit the Chris and Vicky Cornell Foundation, which, according to its website, "raise[s] funds and to support charitable organizations serving children who are facing homelessness, poverty, abuse and neglect worldwide."

Cornell died on May 17, 2017, following a sold-out Soundgarden concert at Detroit, Mich.’s Fox Theater. The artist was found unresponsive on his hotel room's bathroom floor, with a band around his neck, and pronounced dead at the scene. His death was ruled a suicide, but Cornell's wife said that she believes a prescription drug that Cornell was taking contributed to his death.
