Tina Fey, Amy Poehler Respond to Taylor Swift’s ‘Special Place in Hell’ Comment

Before you go out and buy a Team Taylor or Team Tina/Amy t-shirt, perhaps consider the idea that neither side is in the wrong.

Taylor Swift made arguably startling comments in a recent interview with Vanity Fair magazine in response to Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s jokes about her love life at the Golden Globes. “Katie Couric is one of my favorite people, because she said to me she had heard a quote that she loved, that said, ‘There’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help other women’,” Taylor told the magazine, which claims the singer’s statement was made in response to both the awards show incident and “mean girls in general.”

The Golden Globes hostesses — who, ironically, starred in the blockbuster hit, “Mean Girls” — have responded to the VF article, with Amy expressing remorse and Tina getting a bit defensive.

“I feel bad if she was upset,” Amy tells the Hollywood Reporter. “I am a feminist, and she is a young and talented girl. That being said, I do agree I am going to hell. But for other reasons. Mostly boring tax stuff.”

But Tina stands by their Taylor tease, telling E! News, “If anyone was going to get mad at us, I thought it would be James Cameron. I did not see that one coming. It was a joke, it was a lighthearted joke.”

In Tina’s defense, their bit about Taylor dating younger men was indeed a lot more lighthearted than their James Cameron jab, among other roasts of several celebrities that night. During the Globes telecast, Amy admitted she was in the dark about the real-life “Zero Dark Thirty” story, “but when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron.” (The movie was directed by Kathryn Bigelow, one of Cameron’s ex-wives.)

But in Taylor’s defense, perhaps her fighting words to Vanity Fair were blown out of proportion. We have a hard time believing she’d use an interview to tell anyone, even in a roundabout way, to go to hell. This is the star who refuses to diss even evil ex-boyfriends in the press! The 23-year-old is absolutely meticulous about what she says in interviews, of which we at The Boot can attest firsthand. And let’s face it, aside from her catchy tunes, part of the reason the whole world is in love with Taylor is how sweet and charming she comes across in interviews. So, as much as we respect and adore Vanity Fair, we’d be very curious to see the full transcript of this interview, including the reporter’s words. What exactly was her question that prompted this harsh response? Did she bring up Tina’s Golden Globes joke earlier on and then ask about “mean girls in general”? Or did Taylor’s Katie Couric reference come in direct response to the Globes mention?

We want to give Taylor the benefit of the doubt, as she has proven time and again that she can take a joke. She may have just been giving the funny ladies a taste of their own medicine, as she did with Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood after their CMA Awards jab about her breakup with Conor Kennedy. When asked by the New York Times why viewers didn’t see her reaction to that tease, she responded, “They don’t pan to you if you’re not laughing.”

Just listen to any of her albums, and you’ll find Taylor is a big believer in karma.
