A Saturday night (July 7) Avett Brothers concert was canceled last minute after a concertgoer passed through security with a gun. In a statement made after the show's cancellation, the band explained the situation and said that they hope to reschedule the show.

The Avett Brothers were scheduled to play at Edgefield in Troutdale, Ore., on Saturday night when the firearm-related incident took place. In their statement, the band shares that, when "an individual" went through a metal detector at the show, a guard discovered that the person was carrying a gun. The individual told the security guard, who let the patron know that firearms are not allowed inside the venue, that he was an out-of-state police officer, and showed the guard a badge; however, when the security guard asked the patron to wait for a manager, who was going to handle the situation, the patron disappeared.

"The individual disregarded [the security guard's] instructions and ventured immediately into the sizeable audience. After an exhaustive search of the venue by the security staff of both the band and the venue, the individual was not located," the Avett Brothers' statement explains. "Due to the obvious threat posed by someone in the audience with a firearm, regardless of his (unconfirmed) claim of being a member of law enforcement, we were obligated, for the safety of everyone present, to cancel the performance."

The Avett Brothers note that the need to cancel their show was "unfortunate," but that they "have no regret[s]" about the decision. On Twitter, the band's cellist, Joe Kwon, apologized to fans as well.

"People can be really idiotic," Kwon writes. "I love to be on that stage to play for you all, so it’s a crushing blow to be sitting side stage waiting to walk on just to be called back."

Edgefield's official Instagram account reports that a decision about the show's rescheduling will be made in the coming days. Concertgoers should hold onto their original tickets, which will be honored at the makeup date.

The Avett Brothers have a number of shows scheduled throughout this summer and into the fall and winter months. Visit their official website for more details.
