Sturgill Simpson stopped by 'Conan' for a performance of his song 'Living the Dream.'

The song, written by Simpson himself, comes off the musician's latest album, 'Metamodern Sounds in Country Music,' which was released in May. And Simpson may, in fact, be living the dream -- the album has received critical praise, he's up for Emerging Act of the Year at the upcoming Americana Music Awards, and he's had stints touring with Zac Brown Band and Jason Isbell.

“Sturgill writes and sings songs exactly as a man named Sturgill should,” Isbell says. “He’s the genuine article, and his work reminds me of the country music I fell in love with as a kid: ornery, smart and soulful.”

The Kentucky native may be seeing success in the industry, but he's not a fan of the business side of things, admitting that 'Medamodern' may be a “country record that is going to piss off most country fans.”

But the singer does hope to appeal to a wide audience, and the album's traditional-country-mixed-with-southern-rock sound may do just that.

“I want people to focus on listening, not the image,” he says. “And I want to play to everyone: rednecks, dubstep kids, punk rockers, and people who like as-real-as-it-gets country music.”

'Metamodern' is available for download on Amazon.
