Shawna Thompson’s Father Dies

A sad update to a story we posted earlier today about country duo Thompson Square: Shawna Thompson has lost her father to cancer.

“It is with a heavy heart that we inform you that Shawna Thompson’s father, George Michael “Mickey” Mcllwain, passed away yesterday evening in Alabama after a valiant battle with cancer,” reads a statement from the band’s publicist. “Shawna and her family were by his side when he passed. Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time. We ask that you please keep both Shawna and Keifer, as well as Shawna’s family, in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”

Shawna’s love for country music is thanks to her late father, who played guitar for his little girl, teaching her traditional country songs.

Thompson Square have had to cancel a few shows to be with Shawna’s family. They have pulled out of tonight’s New Faces show at the Country Radio Seminar in Nashville. And David Nail will fill in for the couple on Lady Antebellum‘s Own the Night tour stops in Detroit, Mich. (Feb. 25) and Evansville, Ind. (Feb. 26).

Sending our thoughts and prayers to Shawna, Keifer and everyone in the Mcllwain family.
