Shania Twain's new music really is coming -- she promises! After teasing new tunes for a number of years, the Canadian country star told The Boot at the 2016 CMT Artists of the Year ceremony that she is putting the finishing touches on her new songs.

On the red carpet before the Artists of the Year show, at which Twain was named the 2016 Artist of a Lifetime, the singer shared that her new music will reflect her growth as an artist, from a childhood spent singing in bars to support her family to her record-setting country career.

"This album is more diverse than any other album I've ever done -- not that I've done a ton of albums, but it's the most diverse of the albums I've done," Twain says. "There's a lot of variety there, but what I've learned about myself is, as a songwriter of all the songs, the emotion and the voice ties it all together as one artist."

Twain's last record, Up!, was released in 2002; as with her previous three albums, the project was produced and co-written by Twain's then-husband, Robert John "Mutt" Lange. After she and Lange split in 2008, Twain withdrew from the spotlight for a couple of years. She spent 2012-2014 performing a residency, Shania: Still the One in Las Vegas, and hit the road on her Rock This Country Tour in 2015.

Twain admits that it has taken her a while to find her own voice, hence the delay in new material.

"I've had to learn about independence on this album," Twain admits. "It's been a lot of hard work, but the most fun hard work I've ever done so far."

Although Twain has gone through some tough times in recent years, including her divorce from Lange and a battle with dysphonia, she promises that her new disc will not dwell on that past heartbreak.

“It is a more soulful approach to my songwriting than I’ve probably ever allowed myself to have before,” she shares. “It’s fun music, too. I like to stay positive. I’ll make sure that I do some things on there that make you feel good and happy as well. I’m having a lot of fun.”
