Texas singer-songwriter Mike Ryan is premiering the music video for his new song “Sad Song” exclusively for readers of The Boot. Readers can press play above to watch.

Considering the title of “Sad Song,” it’s perhaps not surprising that this tune and its accompany video aren't exactly happy — they're about the end of a relationship. That said, Ryan’s intensely powerful, emotive vocals and beautifully simple piano playing give the track an ultimately uplifting and wholly authentic, if not entirely hopeful, feel.

"Sad Song" has been earning airplay on SiriusXM's The Highway channel. Written by Ryan, Clint Lagerberg and Brent Anderson, the song is the kind of track that sort of wrote itself, according to Ryan.

“There was this moment when we were writing “Sad Song” where we all realized we were onto something, and there was an energy in the room that I don’t see often,” he tells The Boot. “We all locked in and weren’t going anywhere until we were finished telling this story. By the time we were through, it had become the most real, emotional song I’d ever been a part of. We recorded it that same night just with piano and vocal, and then left it that way for the record.”

“Sad Song” will appear on Ryan’s forthcoming third full-length album, titled Blink You’ll Miss It, set for release on Oct. 20. The record follows Ryan's sophomore disc, Bad Reputation, which yielded three No. 1 singles on the Texas Music Chart; it also helped Ryan earn New Male Vocalist of the Year from Texas Regional Radio, an industry association.
