After two years of filming, directors Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio will officially release May It Last, a documentary that focuses on the Avett Brothers, in September. On Wednesday (July 19), the film's new trailer premiered; readers can press play above to watch.

May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers follows the band throughout the process of recording True Sadness, their Grammy Awards-nominated ninth studio album, released in 2016. In addition to chronicling the Avett Brothers’ work with legendary producer Rick Rubin, the documentary also focuses on the family side of the band, including Seth Avett’s 2016 divorce, parenthood, illness and, of course, the challenges of working in the music industry.

Apatow, known for films such as The Big Sick, Knocked Up and Bridesmaids, is a longtime fan of the Avett Brothers. In a March 2017 interview with Filmmaker magazine, he revealed that the idea for the film came when Rubin called to tell him that the Avetts were about to begin work on True Sadness.

“[He] said, 'They are about to start the next record. It might be a fun documentary to follow them while they did that,'" Apatow recalls. “That was when I called Michael, who had directed an episode of the TV show Iconoclasts with me and Lena Dunham.”

May It Last: A Portrait of the Avett Brothers premiered at SXSW 2017, where it received the 24 Beats Per Second Audience Award. In June, Oscilloscope Laboratories acquired theatrical rights to the film, paving the way for the movie to screen, for one night only, in 250 theaters across the country.
