Maddie & Tae won their first-ever CMA Award on Wednesday (Nov. 4), for Music Video of the Year. The duo earned the trophy for the video for their debut single, "Girl in a Country Song," which was a game-changer for them.

"This whole video revolved around the role reversal that we really, really wanted to make intentional. If the song didn’t make it obvious, we wanted the video to," Maddie Marlow told The Boot and other reporters backstage at the 2015 CMA Awards. "We were so grateful to have a team that was extremely up for being bold ... So we’re just very, very [grateful] for a team that believed in that and got behind a crazy concept like that."

The award, which was given to the duo before the televised CMA Awards ceremony, is one of the biggest highlights of their lives and careers so far.

"It's still an unbelievable feeling, even though it wasn’t on the show," Tae Dye adds. "To hold these -- today, it hasn't really sunk in until this moment. We woke up to this news, and it's just amazing that all of our hard work has been recognized, especially with this music video, because "Girl in a Country Song" was our first single. And so, for people to recognize our message and how bold our message is and to be so accepting is unbelievable."

The video's director, TK McKamy, also took a few moments to celebrate the big win, which marked his own first CMA Awards victory as well.

"When I wrote this idea, they came to me, and they didn’t really have an idea yet," McKamy recalls. "They came to me and said, ‘What would you do with this?’ I said, ‘The only way we can push this thing is to give the audience something that’s unexpected, one, and, two, give the audience something that they really didn’t know they wanted.

"When I wanted to do this video, I knew that if I got to do it my way, that it would cause a stir and become viral. And, ultimately, I have this theory that he who tells the best story wins, and I believe that’s what this was," he continues. "I’m very excited that this won as Video [of the Year], because I think it is a great story, and I think it’s something that people wanted to see and didn’t know that they wanted, like I said. And the girls, obviously the song is great, and it pushed itself, and that’s what it takes, a great story and a great song, so I’m very pleased."

McKamy, who has done videos for artists such as Lady Antebellum and Florida Georgia Line, among others, says that Maddie & Tae handled the video shoot like pros, even though they were brand-new artists.

"I remember one moment, they showed up on set, they had no idea that it took that many people to create a video," he recalls. "They were so green, they had no idea. They were beyond themselves for the production that we had for them.

"It was a lot of fun," McKamy ads. "They’re super sweet. Incredible on camera. You’ve seen the girls. They’re incredibly gorgeous. Easy to shoot. It was a great day."
