Lakelin Lemmings ‘Knows Exactly Who She Is’ on Debut Single, ‘Get Around Boy’ – Lyrics Uncovered

Lakelin Lemmings is a fresh young face to many country fans with the release of her debut single, "Get Around Boy," but according to her co-writer and producer, the 20-year-old singer-songwriter is an "old soul" who is destined for a bright future in country music.

Who Is Lakelin Lemmings?

Lemmings has been dreaming of a career in music since she was very young. She was only 6 years old when she began performing, inspired in part by her father, who had been a touring country guitarist.

The West Tennessee native started travelling back and forth to Nashville to work on her own music by the time she was 12. There, she began working with award-winning songwriter and producer Ash Bowers, who had previously played in a band with her father.

Lemmings co-wrote 15 of the 16 songs on her self-titled debut album, which dropped via Quartz Hill Records on Friday (July 24).

Bowers produced the album, and he co-wrote many of the songs, including the lead single.

Who Wrote Lakelin Lemmings' Song "Get Around Boy"?

Lemmings co-wrote "Get Around Boy" with Mike Mobley and Bowers, and she tells Taste of Country that it was only the second time that lineup of writers had worked together.

Though the song's storyline seems autobiographical, the initial idea did not come from her.

"Actually, Mikey came in with the idea," she tells us. "He had the title, and he had a little bit of the melody in the chorus, like, [sings] "On a beach in California ..."

Who Is Lakelin Lemmings' "Get Around Boy" About?

Lemmings acknowledges that the storyline about "two high school sweethearts who start drifting apart, and the girl's got dreams she's chasing" was "inspired a little bit by myself and my career," but she laughingly declines to answer when asked if she had any certain person in mind while writing the song.

"I don't kiss and tell!" she quips before adding, "I don't think I had any one person in mind. I love being creative and just kinda coming up with stories in my head.

"I helped with the lyrics and a little bit of the melody, but what I like to do is just put myself in that story."

Lemmings was 16 at the time she co-wrote the song, and she says it was immediately apparent that she, Mobley and Bowers had a strong rapport as writers.

"They get me," she says. "For some reason, they're really good at thinking like a teenage girl!"

"I wouldn't say it's super-easy," Bowers admits in a phone interview. "And typically, it definitely would not be. But Lakelin brings so much from a songwriting standpoint ... most of what we've written with her comes from her idea or her title, and we help her tell it as best we can."

Mobley is "able to mold to mold to each person that he writes with," Lemmings praises her co-writer. "And he's just a nice guy. No one can hate him."

Lemmings adds that Bowers "kinda comes in with this star energy, like he owns the room. He gets down to business, but he's fun and understanding, and he wants to hear your opinion. He comes in with a vision that he executes very well."

As Lemmings recalls, she and Bowers worked very extensively on the lyrics for "Get Around Boy."

"Then Mikey's a great musician, so he added a guitar track to it, and then Ash added some drumbeats and some other stuff on it, and we got a good guitar-vocal" work tape of the song.

How Did Lakelin Lemmings Land Her Record Deal?

Lemmings had signed her publishing deal already by that point, but she was still shopping record labels.

"Get Around Boy" was one of the songs that convinced Quartz Hill label head Benny Brown to sign her to a deal.

The final master recording of "Get Around Boy" incorporates a mid-tempo beat with a soaring melody, bright pop-country guitars and a contemporary feel that delicately underscores the verses, while creating a sweeping, cinematic chorus.

Bowers admits he's even more of a mentor figure for Lemmimgs than he'd usually be for a young artist, since they have such a longstanding connection.

"I have known Lakelin, literally, since she was born," he states.

"When I felt like I could be of benefit, I just started having her come to town, and putting her in the rooms with hit songwriters, and guiding her along as best as I had the ability to."

Lemmings echoes that, calling Bowers "like a second dad."

"I think him knowing me personally and knowing where I want to go, he just gets it more. He's been doing this a long time, and I really just let him take the reins and have creative liberty. He'll ask my opinion, but honestly, most of the time he's right on the money," she says.

"Get Around Boy" has already been drawing attention for Lemmings, who has just signed with the Kinkead Entertainment Agency and is set to embark on her first tour of the U.K. in August.

She's hopeful that "Get Around Boy" will succeed enough to draw more attention to her album and touring.

"I really do believe in this song," Lemmings shares. "I think it's really special, and I think everyone can relate to it, from my age to 90 years old. Everyone has that one that got away."

Bowers feels confident that Lemmings' sheer strength will overwhelm any doubters.

"When these artists start singing at such a young age, they're better than everybody else, and they've been doing it for so long," he says.

"She's such an old soul," he reflects. "She's so mature. She's one of five siblings, and she's got two siblings under two years old. She often calls herself a 'bonus mom.' So she's had a little bit of responsibility, and she's lived a little bit more than some have."

Bowers points to the fact that Lemming closes all of her shows with "How Great Thou Art" as proof that Lemmings "knows who she is. She knows exactly who she is, and she's just very secure and confident."
