Beyonce’s Re-Imagined ‘Jolene’ Ain’t Your Mama’s Version — See the New Lyrics

Beyonce's highly-anticipated cover of Dolly Parton's hit song "Jolene" is a complete re-imagining of the song.

The events of the storyline are still intact, but she isn't playing around when it comes to another woman tying to steal her man.

To put it simply, she says, "don't try me."

In Parton's version, the narrator begs and pleads for Jolene to leave her man alone. She reasons with her, saying just because you can take him, doesn't mean you should.

Beyonce, on the other hand, knows Jolene's type and she's not afraid to take matters into her own hands if that's what it comes down to.

Is the Song "Jolene" Based on a True Story?

Parton says her version of "Jolene" is based on a real person who worked at the bank where Parton and her husband Carl lived.

"Well, the real story was about my husband," Parton recounts. "This girl who worked at the bank when we first got married. You know, this beautiful redhead. And he was spending more time at the bank than we had money. And I thought, 'Well, that ain't gonna work out too good!'"

Beyonce has yet to reveal the details about her vivid retelling of the story of Jolene. However, there could be some Easter eggs hidden in the lyrics: The narrator mentions she and her man have been together for 20 years. Beyonce and her husband Jay-Z have been married since 2008, but they began dating in 2001. Depending on when she conceptualized the song, it could very well be indicative of her relationship with Jay-Z.

Plus, being public figures with plenty of notoriety, it's not totally out of left field to think there could be several Jolene types looking to steal Beyonce's man.
