Sugarland Perform Outside the Box on the CMA Awards

As is the case with just about every single one of their awards show performances, Sugarland once again wowed the audience at this year's CMA Awards with their music-box inspired rendition of the duo's hit, 'Stuck Like Glue.'

While it started with a slight sketch of an idea, the duo got their creative juices flowing and came up with the theatrical performance that their fans viewed on Wednesday night's (November 10) show. "It was sort of a collective idea," Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles explains, "in the sense that Robert Deaton, who directs the show, came to us and said, 'Let's do this fun idea in a box, in a big velvet red box with lights. We were like, 'Alright, cool,' and as soon as I saw it, I was said, 'This looks cool. It looks like a music-box to me. Awesome. I could be a ballerina; I could be spinning around, Kristian [Bush] could be cranking me up. I could be in a tutu,' and it just went crazy from there. We kept going, 'And then I could walk out of the tutu.' Why not? Obviously, this song is a fun song and has a lot of levity to it, and we wanted to be able to bring that to the performance, as well."

The CMA performance wasn't the first where they showed their playful side. In 2007, Sugarland performed a cover of Beyoncé's 'Irreplaceable' at the American Music Awards, during which the R&B star joined the pair on stage for the second verse. At the 2008 ACM Awards, the two performed 'All I Want to Do,' and at the end of the song, they climbed a set of stairs before falling backwards. In 2009, they collaborated on the rock hit 'Love Shack' with a surprise appearance by the B-52s at the CMT Awards.

The Georgia twosome have a few more special appearances later this month. They will perform 'Stand Up' from their new album 'The Incredible Machine' on the 'CNN Heroes: An All-Star Tribute' November 25 (Thanksgiving night) at 8:00 PM ET, followed by 'CMA Country Christmas' November 29 on ABC, during which Jennifer plays the part of host. Sugarland are also scheduled to perform on 'VH1 Divas' December 5 at 9:00 PM ET.
