Story Behind the Song: Rascal Flatts, ‘I Like the Sound of That’
In August of 2015, Rascal Flatts released "I Like the Sound of That" as the fourth single from their 2014 album, Rewind. The tune was written by Jesse Frasure, Dan + Shay's Shay Mooney and Meghan Trainor, and at the end of April of 2016, it hit No. 1 on the country charts. Below, Frasure and Mooney share their memories of the day they wrote the catchy song.
Shay Mooney: It was one of those days where we had the idea, just kind of started on the groove. Jesse’s an incredible track guy and writer as well. That title -- we landed on that, and I have no idea what happened after that.
Jesse Frasure: I met Shay and Meghan before their artist careers: Shay was working with T-Pain in Atlanta, and Meghan was living in Nantucket, and we kind of just fell into a cool thing with each other, just because we came from different backgrounds. We started working -- I think it was in ‘14.
Mooney: It was way before I met Dan [Smyers]. Actually, a friend of mine in town, Nash Overstreet, he’s the son of Paul Overstreet ... I called him when I first moved to town, and I was like, "Who’s the best track guy that pushes it a little bit? I want somebody that I can work with." The first name he said was "Jesse Frasure." So we started working together.
[turns to Frasure] I called you that day. I remember where I was the first time I talked to you: It was at Blackbird Studio. I called you on the phone, and I was like, "Hey, man, I’m a nobody, I’d love to write with you." He was like, "Yeah, man, let’s do it." We ended up starting to write quite a bit after that.
Frasure: We wrote a song called “DJ Tonight” that’s on [Rascal Flatts' Rewind] record. That was the first time … We were both pretty young in our careers. We didn’t have a lot of cuts going on; in fact, this was the first cut I ever had that my parents were like, "Oh, yeah. Rascal Flatts."
It kind of came from that. We kept [writing together], and of course, Dan + Shay and Meghan started doing their thing … This was so early on.
To see the song do this with a band that we grew up loving meant a lot.
Mooney: He was one of the first people that I had written with, and we came up together. We didn’t have anything. I mean, obviously, you were much further along in your career.
Frasure: It was just baby things here and there. I think that was what was comfortable about it … Meghan was so shy, and she felt comfortable. I think she brought the ukulele to write that day.
Mooney: She’s a very talented writer, and beloved performer, obviously.
