Lisa Matassa, ‘I Won’t Ask’ – Exclusive Video Premiere
Lisa Matassa is back with a new single, and she’s giving readers of The Boot an exclusive look at her new lyric video.
The Long Island country singer got the idea for ‘I Won’t Ask’ during a night out in Nashville last summer. She was with a group of friends at Robert’s on Broadway, when she noticed a young couple at the bar.
“At first they seemed really into each other and very much an item, but it wasn’t long before they started arguing and the girl walked away,” Matassa recalls. “Throughout the night these two would go back and forth, hugging one minute and walking away from each other a few moments later. I remember thinking to myself these two must be relatively new in their relationship, because they kept playing this cat and mouse game.”
She woke up in the middle of the night with the idea for the song. She wrote down the lyrics for the verses, chorus and bridge, then went back to sleep. She finished the song later with guitarist Colin Smith and Tony Bruno, and the trio recorded the track at Bruno’s home studio in Woodstock, N.Y.
The success of Matassa’s most recent album, ‘Somebody’s Baby,’ has taken her from a regional phenomenon to a national profile. Though the Long Island-based mother and wife defies almost every industry convention, she’s opened shows for Lady Antebellum, Dierks Bentley, LeAnn Rimes, Thompson Square, Eric Church, Ronnie Dunn and Lee Brice. Matassa also performed at the 2013 CMA Music Festival, and recently made her debut at the hallowed Ryman Auditorium.
“It’s just crazy right now,” she says. “I’m operating at a very fast pace, and doing exactly what I want to do musically … which is wonderful.”
