Even the best lyricists write a dud every so often. Jason Isbell is generally known as one of the finest songwriters in Americana music, but he admits that he doesn’t hit it out of the park every time.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Isbell reveals the worst lyric he’s ever written. It can be found in his song “Cigarettes and Wine," which appears on Isbell’s 2009 album Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit.

“I sort of break character,” he tells the magazine. “[It's the line] ‘She kept me happy all the time / I know that ain’t much of a line.’

"It always bothered me," Isbell adds, "but John Prine loves it. If it’s alright with him, I guess it’s all right."

In his interview with Rolling Stone, Isbell also offers up hot-take opinions on everything from President Donald Trump to women in country music. He also shares some tough criticisms of the current state of mainstream country: “I don't like that kind of music at all,” he admits, though he does praise Miranda Lambert's songs and Little Big Town’s smash “Girl Crush.”

Whether or not “Cigarettes and Wine” will make its way into Isbell’s future setlists remains to be seen. Fans can catch him out on the road promoting his latest album, The Nashville Sound, at venues across the country early this year.
