Hear Glen Campbell’s New Song, ‘Everybody’s Talkin”

Ahead of the release of his final album, AdiosGlen Campbell is treating fans to an advance listen of his version of the song “Everybody’s Talkin’.” Readers can press play above to hear it.

“Everybody’s Talkin'” is about the desire to take a break, when life becomes too much to handle, and head to the ocean to reset. In the song, Campbell sings, “Everybody’s talkin’ at me / I don’t hear a word they’re sayin’ / Only the echoes of my mind …”

“I’m goin’ where the sun keeps shinin’ / Through the pourin’ rain / Goin’ where the weather suits my clothes,” Campbell continues in the song’s chorus. “Bankin’ off of the northeast winds / Sailin’ on a summer breeze / Skippin’ over the ocean like a stone …”

Campbell’s version of “Everybody’s Talkin'” is a cover. The song was originally written by Fred Neil, who released his version of the track on a self-titled album in 1967. The song rose to popularity, however, after Harry Nilsson recorded it and released it as a single in 1968; in 1969, Nilsson’s version was used as the theme song for the movie Midnight Cowboy and hit No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. Nilsson received a Grammys trophy for “Everybody’s Talkin’,” and the song has since been covered by a number of artists, and been used in movies such as Forrest Gump, Borat and The Hangover Part III.

Campbell was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2011. The Country Music Hall of Fame member embarked on a final tour following the diagnosis; his last show was on Nov. 30, 2012. In 2014, Campbell was moved into a residential care facility when it became too difficult for his wife Kim to continue caring for him at home.

Adios will be available on June 9. Fans can pre-order the album now.
