Kudos to David Nail, who earned his first No. 1 song this week with 'Let it Rain.' The tune took nearly a year to climb to the top of the charts and best his 2009 Top 10 hit, 'Red Light.'

"When you're 25 weeks in and you believe in a song, but you're stuck in the middle of the chart, it's hard to think you're gonna get there," David admits, "and yet, you can't think that it won't go all the way. I am a very blessed and lucky man, because not only did my label never give up on me, but so many people at country radio hung in there with us, too."

This remorseful cheating song was actually co-written by the happily married singer. "'Let it Rain' was a song that was written right when [my wife, Catherine, and I] first started dating," David tells The Boot. "She was more leery of her friends and family's reaction of 'what's he doing? What's he thinking?'"

However, when it came time to making the music video, David and Catherine had to have a very 'uncomfortable' talk. "I went home that night and laid out the parameters to my wife, and she sat there very quietly," he explains. "I told her, 'We're going to have some stipulations.' I had planned on not having any sort of interaction with the girl, out of respect for my wife, and I felt that made it intriguing. Here's this guy who's so disgusted by what he did that he doesn't even want to look at her, see her, smell her or have any contact whatsoever. It's that awkward three minutes where she's trying to gather her stuff and get out the door without making him feel any worse."

'Let it Rain' was the first single from David's second record, 'The Sound of a Million Dreams,' which took on what has been dubbed a 'countrypolitan' sound. "It's got strings all over it, but it's the countriest lyric in the world," he describes. "And that's the thing I hope to achieve. Glen Campbell grew up in a tiny town in Arkansas, and I grew up four hours away [in a town] that's just as tiny, and we're just hoping to maybe take up a little corner of the big genre that is country music."

Next on David's itinerary is the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Jan. 22-23. Get more information here.
