Chris Stapleton made his Saturday Night Live debut on Jan. 16, performing his songs "Parachute" and "Nobody to Blame."

Stapleton sang "Parachute" first, backed by his band, which includes his wife, Morgane. The singer-songwriter kept the performance simple, but the twangy, traditional tune allowed Stapleton to really showcase the sound that has earned him critical acclaim, as well as a bevy of fans who are after music that hearkens back to country's roots. Stapleton and his band returned later in the evening to sing "Nobody to Blame," his most recent single. The artist's soulful voice shines on the bluesy tune, while harmonies from his wife during the choruses added that extra something; Stapleton and his band also got to show off a little bit with a mini-jam session at the end of the tune. Readers can watch the performance below.

Both "Parachute" and "Nobody to Blame" are from Stapleton's debut solo album, Traveller. The Grammy-nominated album landed in the No. 1 spot on the all-genre Billboard 200 late last year, after November’s 2015 CMA Awards, during which the singer won Album of the YearNew Artist of the Year and Male Vocalist of the Year.

“It’s unbelievable,” Stapleton reflects of his CMA Awards successes. “This is an unbelievable thing, and I’m not going to take it lightly.”

Stapleton is one of many country stars to appear on Saturday Night Live during the show’s four-decade run. Most recently, Blake Shelton acted as the sketch comedy show’s host and musical guest in January of 2015. Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson,Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Dolly Parton, Tim McGraw and Taylor Swift are also among those who have hosted and performed.
