Cam Finds Her Acceptance in the Country Music Community ‘Weird’ (But ‘Great’)

Cam has earned a hit single with her song "Burning House," was nominated for six ACM Awards and received a nomination for a Grammy -- but to the singer, all of that pales in comparison to how her peers have welcomed her into the country music community with open arms.

"It does feel weird," she tells The Boot. "When I did feel really great and feel very loved was [performing] at the ACMs, when everyone stood up and clapped; I felt a lot of respect. I wanted to cry when it happened ... It felt like a very organic kind of welcome."

Earlier this year, Cam served as an opening act on Brad Paisley's Crushin' It World Tour, and this summer, she's on the road with Dierks Bentley, opening shows on his Somewhere on a Beach Tour. Those coveted opening slots are even more proof that the up-and-comer has earned a permanent place in the industry.

"You work so hard just to hope that your peers care," Cam shares. "It just feels really good. And that’s all you can ask for, is to have people really care about the music you’re making, and that meant a lot."

Still, the California native acknowledges that she has a lot to learn before she feels really at home performing in front of large crowds.

“It’s a lot to learn, as a performer, how to all of a sudden reach that many people,” Cam admits. “It’s an interesting growing pain, for a second, but obviously not a bad one to have. It’s really enjoyable.”
