Country up-and-comer Brinn Black took a year-long hiatus from music just as her career was taking off -- but why? In this exclusive video, the Virginia native opens up to The Boot about that decision, and how something that happened during her break led to her new single, "Daddy's Medicine."

A couple years ago, Black was riding high: Her career was moving forward, she was in love, and "everything was going amazing." Then, the unthinkable happened.

"My fiancé passed away of a heart attack at 30 years old," Black shares. "And it wrecked me. It rocked my world, and it still does."

During her grieving period, Black became much closer to her father. "Daddy's Medicine," which readers can hear below, was born out of her brokenness.

“Since I was a kid, my dad has really struggled with alcohol addiction, and it’s torn my family apart,” Black tells Taste of Country; however, a couple of years ago, Black's father decided to check into a rehab facility in Nashville. "Daddy's Medicine" has been "a big part" of the healing process, both for Black and for her family as a whole; in fact, when her dad heard the song, Black recalls, he called her and said, "Brinn, I can’t promise you I’ll never stop drinking, but I can promise you I’ll never stop trying not to."

Black's previous singles include upbeat songs such as "Crushin'" and "Hey Love," so "Daddy's Medicine" is a veer off her usual musical path.

"Usually I gravitate toward the fun, uptempo, roll-your-windows-down, whoa-whoa kind of songs," Black says in the video above, "which I still love. But this song came out, personally, when I needed it to, and it's really gotten me through some of the roughest times in my entire life."

She adds, "This is just the accumulation of my past, my present and my future. That's where I've been: I've been writing, recording, working on my head and my heart."

This summer, Black plans to release her most vulnerable project to date. In the meantime, "Daddy's Medicine" is available for download on iTunes.

"I couldn't be prouder to be where I am today, and to have this story that I have," Black says. "And to be still making music. So, I'm back!"
