Pam Tillis, John Cowan + More Sing Handel’s ‘Messiah’ for Haiti

Pam Tillis, Buddy Jewell, John Cowan and Mandy Barnett are among a group of singers and songwriters who will gather in Nashville tonight (Jan. 19) to take part in a benefit for the people of Haiti.

Dubbed 'Hallelujah for the Red Cross,' the event will feature the Music City Community Chorus in a post-Christmas production of the holiday favorite, "Handel's Messiah."

"I just feel like it is the right thing to do," Pam told The Boot during rehearsals on Monday night. "If I can be some help for this, if I can help out someone in some way, then I am glad to be here." Pam added that since she had agreed to participate nearly a week ago, she's been listening to her part on tape and preparing for it. "It had to be re-written for popular voice," she explained.

"My thoughts are that this is the least we can do," John Cowan said, adding that the gathering also gave him the chance to catch up with his friends in the music business.

Both Pam and John added they have supported the American Red Cross, which will benefit from the concert, in previous activities. As a member of New Grass Revival, John recalled doing a huge concert for the organization at Vanderbilt University.

The Music City Community Chorus is directed by vocal coach Renee Grant-Williams. This is her first effort to bring together the volunteer chorus, members of the Nashville Symphony and entertainers from Nashville's music community. The fundraiser, which will benefit the American Red Cross earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, will be held at the Limelight Club in Nashville, at 7:30 p.m. tonight.
