The Mavericks Frontman Raul Malo Has Been Diagnosed With Cancer
This week, Raul Malo -- frontman of mainstay country group the Mavericks -- revealed that he has been diagnosed with cancer.
In a video update posted to the band's Instagram, Malo explained that some abnormal results flagged during a routine physical led to his diagnosis. The singer said a colonoscopy and a CAT scan revealed "two cancerous spots" in his intestinal system.
"The doctors have all agreed that I start therapy after the 4th of July," he continued, assuring fans that this particular form of chemotherapy "is the least intrusive of all of them," and that his medical team has told him that many patients continue to work normally throughout the course of treatment.
Still, he warned fans that depending on how he reacts to the therapy, his illness may have an impact on the Mavericks' 2024 tour dates. "Some of the shows may be affected this year as we navigate this situation and see how the therapy goes," Malo said.
The possibility of impacted shows was one reason why Malo chose to share his diagnosis with fans, he explained, but it wasn't the only factor in his decision to take his illness public. He's also hoping to issue a reminder to listeners to take care of their health.
"Go see a doctor. Be proactive in your health. It'll help fight whatever ails you," he said as he concluded his message. "Stay healthy, take care of yourselves and I'll see you out on the road."
Shortly after his announcement, Malo issued a statement to Billboard that reiterated his hopes that his fans will take care of their health, and also touched on his prognosis.
"[My medical team has] reassured me that this is a very common form of cancer, and my odds are good," he explained. "Fortunately, we have a plan in place, and I'm feeling great! I'll continue to be as active as possible throughout these treatments, but it does mean a few shows may be affected this year, and we'll have more information for you as soon as possible on that."
