Billy Currington Opens Up About New Song, ‘Drinkin’ Town With a Football Problem’
With a chorus that goes, "We’re a drinkin' town with a football problem / With two main things we all have in common / We love ‘em both and don’t want to solve ‘em / We’re a drinking town with a football problem,” the tune made the Georgia native nostalgic for his younger days.
"That song reminded me of my high school hometown football team." Currington tells Billboard. "But, at the same time, there are so many towns we have played in that resemble that, too. It reminds me of so many places I've been a part of. I think a lot of people will relate to it."
"Drinkin' Town With a Football Problem" was written by Elizabeth Elkins, Vanessa Olivarez and the Henningsens (Aaron, Brian and Clara Henningsen), but Currington says that even though he didn't have a hand in penning the tune, it conjures up some beloved memories.
"Football was so huge in our town," he notes. "If you didn't play, you were going to the game. If you were anywhere in the vicinity, you were going to the game. There are so many memories of Friday nights that I have and cherish to this day."
Recording the 12-track Summer Forever, which also includes Currington's recent No. 1 song "Don't It," was a fun time for the singer, and he hopes that fun infused itself into the music.
“Making this album was such a blast for me. I put a lot of love into this project and couldn’t be more excited for fans to hear the new music,” Currington says. “Summer Forever, for me, represents a positive, happy, good-time lifestyle, and that’s what I hope the fans feel when they hear this record.”
Currington is currently on the road with Tim McGraw, serving as the opening act on McGraw's 2015 Shotgun Rider Tour. Both Currington and McGraw are among the acts set for the 2015 Taste of Country Music Festival and Country Jam 2015. A complete list of upcoming dates is available on Currington's website.
