Who says you need electric guitars to rock? This is the second year that the Avett Brothers spent their Halloween weekend in Nashville, but instead of selling out the city's famed Ryman Auditorium one night, the folk-rockers sold it out two nights in a row. Simply put, this band breeds hardcore fans. The majority of the audience at Friday night's (October 29) show sang along to not just the radio singles, but to every word of every song. Fans were on their feet at the sound of the first note and never sat back down.

The Avetts kicked off their Friday set with the rousing 'Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise,' followed seamlessly by the head-shaking jam, 'The Fall,' and the gorgeous romantic folk ballad, 'And It Spread.' Throughout the show, brothers Seth and Scott Avett played a musical chairs of sort, switching between acoustic guitar, banjo, keys and vocals. And no matter who was singing lead, their voices blended in a soothing harmony that perfectly accompanies their uniquely passionate stage performance, alongside the equally passionate Bob Crawford on stand-up bass, cellist Joe Kwon and drummer Jacob Edwards.

Other crowd favorites at the Ryman show included 'Paranoia in B-Flat Major,' during which the audience practically took the mic, yelling every lyric and almost drowning out the band. The crowd also went nuts with 'Tear Down the House,' which Seth and Scott performed acoustically, and 'Salina,' which had the room ringing with syncopated clapping. And never to disappoint, the Avetts performed the song that arguably put them on the map, the poignant 'I and Love and You,' which Seth and Scott sang with such emotion, it was like they were performing it for the first time.

The more than two hour show ended with encores of 'Kick Drum Heart' and 'November Blue' for the still-packed house of fans who refused to leave until the Avetts sent them out with a few more bangs.

With their infectious blend of rock, country, folk, bluegrass, punk, pop and almost everything in between, the Avett Brothers have made a name for themselves as one of the best live bands on the road today. Their latest album, 'Live, Volume 3,' features a selection of live performances from their decade-long career. It's the follow up to their critically acclaimed studio CD, 'I and Love and You.'
