Sold-out shows at Fenway Park, several gleaming Grammy Awards and a whole lot of hit records make Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band quite the celebrity, respected in both country music and across other genres. But off stage, it's crucial to Brown that he's a levelheaded guy -- not just for his sake, but for his kids' well-being, too.

Brown and his wife have five kids (four girls and one boy), and he's aware of the abnormal circumstances that come with having a father as a celebrity.

"I talk to them about it and try to let them know I'm just like everyone else. I just play music for a living," he tells the Detroit Free Press. "When I’m home, I’m Daddy, and everything is completely normal. They know it’s my job."

While he can't do much to change his celebrity status, Brown is laser-focused on ensuring that his children are good people, hoping that it will affect them in all areas of life.

"[Somebody told me something] about being a parent that resonated with me in a big way: If you teach your kids how to be really good people, then they’ll be successful at everything that they do. So I try to teach them perspective, that they don’t ever treat anybody any way but great, no matter what. To be gracious and sweet and loving …," Brown explains. "My job is to instill in them to just be great people, regardless of what their daddy does or what other people’s daddies do. That we’re all the same — that even though some people treat me differently than other people, I just try to keep that core value right there."

It's very important to Brown that his children don't have an ego or sense of entitlement because of his public status. In fact, he recently told his daughter, "You know what? I don’t ever want you to tell anybody that your daddy's famous, because that doesn’t sound good," after she admitted that she knew he was famous.

"I’m no different than any other human being. I play music for a living, and we’re very blessed. But it’s important not to do that," Brown reflects. "So you find those moments. I don’t want my children to have any kind of ego or entitlement because of what I do. I want them to be good people, and we fight every day so that they’ll be that way."

Perhaps the reason that Brown has such a level-headed understanding of fame is because it took him a whole lot of work to get to this place. He wasn't an overnight success; in fact, he wasn't even focused on getting to superstardom.

"You know, I had my head down, and I was concentrating on that night. I was always trying to project and get better. Just busting my a-- — trying to work as hard as I could work ...," he says. "I didn’t expect all of this stuff to happen. I had hoped to be as successful as I could. I hope to learn the game and the business as I go along, and I try to be the best I can personally be to lift up my guys and be the best leader I can be. I knew I was going to make it, but I didn’t know what that meant."

Now, with many accolades and millions of fans to his name, Brown is familiar with having a platform, and he isn't just focused on having a rock-solid band: He's looking at the bigger picture.

"I know it’s my responsibility to take the platform I’ve been given and do great things with it. And that’s where my focus is," Brown notes. "Not just being a great entertainer and having a great band — it’s about what you do with it, what you do with the resources and the energy that’s created all around it."

Through all the twists and turns of a music career, fans can count on Brown to stay the course, keep working hard and putting on great shows -- with songs that he knows fans will enjoy.

"You’ve got to get people the hits they expect you to play — but we’ve also got to remember the things we played last time we were in that city. So we keep a record of our setlists," he reveals. "So, mostly, you can change the musical arrangement, or change a part so there are some surprises, but people want to hear what they’re familiar with."

The ZBB recently dropped a new single, "Beautiful Drug," off their 2015 gold-selling Jekyll + Hyde album. A list of the band's upcoming shows is available on ZacBrownBand.com.
