Wynonna Talks Raising Teens
Wynonna may be a multi-platinum selling artist, best-selling author and successful TV spokesperson, but the entertainer admits there are some things she is still learning about -- like parenting! With motherhood the most important title she holds, Wy admits she doesn't have all the answers.
"I'm walking through a real season right now of watching my children move away from me," she tells Nashville's Tennessean newspaper of her children, 14-year-old Elijah and 12-year old Grace. "It's real painful, because they are at an age where they don't need me as much. I'm sort of moving into this position of coach instead of parent."
That position can involve some uncomfortable moments, as she learned recently at the beach with her adolescent son. Noticing that Elijah was paying close attention to the scantily-clad women in swimsuits, Wynonna says she had to begin the dialogue of sex, drugs ... and even Viagra! But awkward moments aside, she is realizing how hard it can be to let go.
"This is not a period where they are coming to me saying, 'Gosh, should I play drums or guitar?' So I don't have any control over it like I thought I did," she says. "I thought I could help them want to take ballet or piano lessons, and I think what I'm learning is we are merely the bow that launches the arrow into the air. I think Grace and Elijah have their own destinies, and I'm watching them become who they are destined to be."
Wynonna reports that son Elijah loves skateboarding and surfing and hopes to one day own a bread truck and travel the world. Her daughter Grace is also the outdoorsy type. She is on a 42-day hike in Arizona, learning how to build fires and camp out.
