Now that Wynonna will be among the contestants on the upcoming season of "Dancing With the Stars," she's not only brushing up on her dancing skills, she's concentrating on improving her overall health. The singer, who told "Good Morning America" viewers earlier this week that she decided to participate in the competition to "get down to her birth weight," is looking forward to the many benefits the show will offer, in spite of the challenges ahead.

"This is a great diversion for me," Wy tells People magazine, "because it will focus on self-care, which for women -- especially working as hard as I do -- we forget to put ourselves on the list. This will force me to take care of myself."

Wynonna acknowledges that she lost the focus on her health not long after her husband, drummer Cactus Moser was forced to have his leg amputated due to a motorcycle accident last August.

"I definitely went into being the wife and caretaker, and I let myself go in terms of way down the list," she explains. "There were days and days and days that I didn't walk. I'm a walker, and I'm always telling my fans how to be healthy. It's not about size and numbers, but I can honestly say I've seen the pictures from when I got married and before, and I see them now and I think, 'You know what? I deserve to be healthy. I'm worth it.'"

To keep her motivated on the DWTS journey, Wy is calling on friend and two-time former "Dancing" contestant, Kirstie Alley to be her "mentor in this process."

"I've talked to Kirstie so many times," notes the singer. "She said if you have fun and you do everything that you're going to be doing with your heart, the rest will follow. I really believe that. She really misses [the show]."

Wynonna will be partnered with last season's all-star winner, Tony Dovolani, and thinks her participation in the competition will offer more than a few surprises.

"It's cool because I don't think a lot of people thought that I would be doing this show," she says. "There's a little bit of me that goes, 'Oh, really? Watch this.' I do have a competitive part of me."

Wy isn't the only country singer joining the cast this season. Kellie Pickler will also be showing off her dancing talents when the series returns for season 16, March 18 at 8:00 PM ET on ABC.
