Wille Nelson Creates ‘Teapot Party’ for Marijuana Legalization
Willie Nelson‘s arrest for pot possession over the weekend has not deterred the Texan from smoking the illegal substance. In fact, it has only fueled his determination to further advocate the legalization of marijuana.
“Tax it, regulate it and legalize it,” Willie stated to CelebStoner.com following his arrest. “And stop the border wars over drugs. Why should the drug lords make all the money? Thousands of lives will be saved.”
Willie, who was arrested at a U.S. Border Patrol checkpoint the morning of November 26, has already created a new group to focus on his efforts. “There’s the Tea Party. How about the Teapot Party?,” he suggests. “Our motto: We lean a little to the left.” Only two days after his arrest — and subsequent release after posting a $2,500 bond — the 77-year old started ‘Willie Nelson’s Teapot Party’ Facebook page to create awareness of his new cause.
The group, which already has more than 5,000 followers, has earned the respect of several high-profile celebrities, including actor and comedian Tommy Chong. “If Willie gets behind something, you know it’s going to be big and in your face,” Tommy tells CelebStoner. “Any pot party is a wonderful idea.”
Willie, who was previously arrested in 2005 and 2006 for drug possession, insists his habit is not an indicator of his health. “I don’t drink anymore. That was always my biggest problem,” he tells The Boot. “I never did cocaine or any of those things. Alcohol was always my enemy, for as far back as I can remember. When I quit drinking and quit smoking cigarettes, a lot of my problems went away.”
His new Teapot Party Facebook page is not the Grammy winner’s only Facebook presence. His good friend — and fellow Farm Aid founder, John Mellencamp — recently started a Facebook page to encourage support for Willie becoming a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
Willie’s legal problems haven’t altered his busy touring schedule. He will spend most of the next three months on the road. Find his concert dates here.
