Ty Herndon Covers Miley Cyrus’ ‘The Climb’ at the GLAAD Media Awards [WATCH]

Since Ty Herndon came out as gay in November, he has been vocal about his support for the LGBTQ community and honest about the fears and struggles his coming out brings with it. Putting his feelings into song, Herndon performed Miley Cyrus' hit "The Climb" at the GLAAD Media Awards on Saturday, May 9.

"It's an honor to be doing my part for love and acceptance," Herndon said from stage. "It's an honor to be here tonight."

Whatever difficulty or challenge you're facing, "The Climb" likely fits the situation. But the song may as well have been custom-written for Herndon, with lyrics like, "The struggles I'm facing / The chances I'm taking / Sometimes might knock me down / But, no, I'm not breaking." He performed the beautiful and inspiring lyrics with a gospel choir backing him up, making for an emotionally charged performance.

Herndon has been in a serious relationship with his partner, Matt Collum, for more than six years. After coming out, he was overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support from his fans and country peers. He is using the positive reaction to empower himself and others to change the conversation about homosexuality -- especially in the South; however, Herndon is being cautious about jumping into activism too quickly.

"I’m gonna get my footing with all this … I think if you’re going to speak to something, you need to be as knowledgeable as you can," he explains. "Right now, I’m just gonna sing about it.”

Herndon will co-host Nashville's inaugural Concert for Love and Acceptance on June 12 at City Winery. The event will bring together artists and celebrities to support LGBTQ acceptance and is co-sponsored by GLAAD. Performers and special guests at the event will include country legend Crystal Gayle, Billy Gilman, Shelly Fairchild, contemporary Christian singer Jennifer Knapp, American Idol finalist Melinda Doolittle and songwriter Desmond Child.

It is Herndon's hope that the event will "help encourage an environment that will make it easier for young people at risk to get help and feel comfortable about who they are and not have to go through the same struggles that I have faced."
